OVERVIEW OF MEDICAL ADVICE
Consult your Family doctor for Pre-trip Health screening at least 2 months prior to the trek
Issues:
Need to withstand lower Oxygen levels at high altitudes
Long hours of trekking, may not sleep well due to new location, altitude - mental and physical exhaustion
Potential illnesses and injuries
A detailed Pre-trip Health assessment is important to screen for conditions that may affect your health while trekking:
Cardiac conditions - heart murmurs, ischemic heart disease, hypertension, arrhythmias (irregular heart beat). Consider detailed cardiac evaluation which may include ECG, Treadmill stress test and Echocardiogram (especially if above 40years age)
Respiratory conditions - Asthma, COPD
Physical problems eg Knee arthritis, Back problems
Menstrual issues - managing heavy flow, delaying menses
Consider basic blood tests to screen for medical disorders that can affect your ability to trek safely including Anemia, Deficiency of iron/ B12/ folic acid/ Vit D/ magnesium, Thyroid dysfunction, Kidney and Liver dysfunction, Diabetes.
